Assignment Questions

United States United StatesHow much for a 4 hour event taking pictures with the Easter Bunny?

Hello all,

I've answered a few question here, and this is my first question.

We have been asked to shoot an event for a company function.  From what I've got so far, it's 4 hour event that involves taking one shot with the Easter Bunny, and printing it onsite.

This is new for us, as we normally charge a flat rate which includes all of our time (drive, setup, shoot & post processing time), then ultimatly send selected shots to the lab to be printed.

I'm not a big fan of printing on the inkjet printer, but I don't want to miss an oppourtinity to make some money.

We have also been told the other photographer that they have used in the past charges $5/shot.  I don't want to undercut them, as that's not beneficial to the common cause.

The details that I have so far are:

  • 1 hour drive to the event
  • Event is 4 hours
  • 1 hour drive back
  • Total time 6 hours
  • I'm thinking 5 minutes for each shot, which includes post processing
  • Cost for photo paper and ink cartridges estimated at $.50/print
  • We would maintain all rights to the shots

I hope I've given you all enough details to share you thoughts, and thanks in advance for any and all answers.

Todd

I know Juergen, I couldn't believe it myself, lol.  I've actually passed on this deal, as it wasn't going to be profitable.  Would cost $60 in gas to get there, and the potential cash flow was about $100-$120.

Uh, sorry to hear this. Event photographer can be profitable, but you need some upfront "live" equipment (at least 2 printers, laptop(s) and operator additionally to a photographer) and make it often. Everything which can go wrong technically will go wrong, so only if this is a routine job, it can be profitable.

Thanks for the tip Juergen, we're really not into events like this, which is why I had the question, but I do see the potential in it being profitable.

Juergen - if the Easter Bunny really does exist, it would be like photographing the Loch Ness Monster! He would own the rights - think of the licensing!

They are looking for $5 per shot, with potentially 20 -25 shots for $100 - $120.
