QuestionDoes such a thing as a 1/8th or even 1/16th page licensing fee for magazines exist?

Sven and I run into an interesting argument, please read the thread here:

http://www.shakodo.com/licensing/3r/editorial-image-to-be-used-for-one-time-8th-page-mag-ad/?order=oldest#answers

In the last 10 years I haven't had any request of any magazine for licensing an image smaller than 1/4th of a page. They sometimes printed this smaller, but they all bought at least the license for 1/4th of a page and I leave it to them if they want to print it smaller.

Looking at my internal resources here, I don't even find a reference to 1/8th or 1/16th licensing fees...if you for example look at a random PhotoShelter image and add it to the cart, you can use a free version of FotoQuote to find out the licensing prices for US usage. The interesting part: There is no such thing as a 1/8th or 1/16th page category either.

I also learned a lot from Seth Resnick, who used to have a lot of good pricing info online, but - I just checked - he seems to charge for this now, too. Never saw a category smaller than 1/4th there either.

It might be the way I work or something, but I didn't came across this in the last 10 years and being published in ~40 countries, some of them overlapping (Germany, USA) with Svens experience.

Anybody?

And there are even sizes in between, like 1/3 and 2/3....

Sure, flexibility is king, you can charge for full page and give them 40% off = 2/3 page. But I simply haven't seen this printed, published or what else somewhere, only the 1/4, 1/2 1/1 etc range.

Juergen, I am selling to US magazines every week and they send you a price list with their prices based on the sized and based on:

Non Exclusive
Red Carpet
Studio
Paparazzi

Their price list start at Spot size (1/16) and goes up 1/8, 1/4 / 1/2/ 1/1 Cover and 1/3/ 2/3. You can talk to every major photo agency that sells to US mags and they will tell you exactly the same.

Ah, we might talk about something different: If I get approached to license an already existing photo, its me who makes the price. They can suggest how much they want to charge, but its me who sells, ergo me who sets the price. But I would love to see such a price list, could you send me one just as a reference? You can just reply to the shakodo confirmation email address. Would be very useful and doesn't really matter what magazine, I am more interested in the format and to clear our misunderstanding.

Thanks!

We are talking about the same thing Juergen! We are sending out images every day - from events to news. The mags pick and based on their prices we agree. To make their job easier on a daily basis we (and many other agents here in the US) agreed to something which is called NON EXCLUSIVE USAGE FEES.
Of course you don't have to agree to those prices, but if you want to make sales on a weekly basis you should.

Almost! I think we are both correct, the difference is simply that YOU submit images on a daily base and I am talking about a magazine approaching me to license a single (or a few) photo(s).
That’s different, because they get approached on a daily base and can so dictate the pricing, while when I get approached I dictate the pricing. The difference is basically who is more in control here.

Interesting! You never stop learning!

Ok, Sven, you win! Thanks! We are playing in different genres, but you are 100% correct. I never stop learning, nor do I want to!
