PostingAmazingly Ignorant or Amazingly Insulting

I receive quite a few proposals from prospective clients and I understand that they try to get the most for their money. Sometimes though, I just have to shake my head and ask "Are they that ignorant of what it takes to run a business or are they just that bold to suggest something like this in the hopes that somebody will accept? This is an actual email from a woman in New Jersey inquiring about my services:

"Hello, My name is Clare. I am working with XXXXXXX Doors on an important project to update our company website with high resolution photos.
There are 23 different shots we require be taken of one door; however, it is not limited to just these shots. We are a small company so we are willing to pay anywhere from $75- $150 for the entire job. The product is hand-crafted mahogany doors. Once you agree to take the photos I will send more information and our client's contact information.
The is in XXXXXX, NJ.
Please email me back at the earliest convenience.
Thanks, Clare"

So, they are willing to spend up to $150 on this important project that invloves 23 photos - maybe more ! So for $150 they get unlimited number of photos?

After I finished laughing, and composed my thoughts and then rewrote my response several times. I responded to Clare and informed her - very professionally and courteously - about the economic realities in the year 2012 and what it takes to produce professional photography. I then submitted an estimate for 20x her budget. I doubt I'll hear back from her.

When I read proposals like this it just strengthens my resolve to continue educating clients on what it takes to create quality photography and how those quality images benefit the client.

How do you respond to these type requests? Do you show the restraint I did or do you speak your mind? Or worse, do you accept what is offered?

A respectful decline would go along way. Trying to educate someone who is not asking for advice is futile and sometimes counter productive. Getting this type of requests are part and parcel of doing business. Sooner or later they will realize the quality of the images theyll be getting will suck, forcing them to rethink their acquisition process.

As to whether to accept the gig or not, is totally up to your own motivation, if you're starving and need every bit of gig available then yeah, if you can afford to say no then dont.

I'm not so sure some people realize "the quality of the images they'll be getting will suck..." unless somebody shows them the difference. In my experience, they will get the soccer mom photos, say "they are good enough" and use them anyway.  They will never see the value added unless they know what that value is. If we don't educate the customer who will?

I can only hope that she is a newly placed intern and was simply following orders. I'm sure that some art student, soccer mom or Craigslist reader will step up and give it a shot followed by the lowest bid in the second round and then Jim comes in for the save. Yes, there a many out there that think that they can get it for free, impose their will and name their price and use the images as they please. My response varies from an attempt to ask about usage and how it effects my fee to crickets chirping as they wait for a note or phone call that will never come.

Hey, at least they offered MONEY! You should see the requests I am getting :)

Actually I think its time to have a hidden web page on your own site where you show some "snaps" and some professional lit images of the same object. Then, when you receive another of these requests, just tell them:

"For $150 I can offer this (link to badly lit snaps), but if you want quality like this (link to professionally lit pictures) I charge $xxxx, because {insert 25 years experience, expensive equipment, etc. here}".

Somewhere on this site I actually saw before/after shots of a kitchen, which made a good example. I think if people see actually something they can compare, it would go a long way in client education.

So how many goats or chickens do you charge for a portrait session? :-)

I wish I would get goats or chicken, but all they offer is (surprise!) credits!

Ironically just 10 min after I posted my comment above, I received this email:

I have received an acceptance letter of a publication in an academic journal [deleted] regarding the folkloric practice of "ushi no koku mairi." This acceptance, however, is pending my incorporation of a few visual items. In particular, an image of the cursing kit (an actual image at 300dpi would be optimal) which I once saw on a website with your name on it. I was hoping that you would grant me permission to use an image from your gallery and in return, I would include a detailed credit to your work and a copy of the paper. Please let me know at your convenience. The picture in question was very hard to get (a Japanese cursing kit) and due to Japanese superstition, practically nobody likes to help you getting one, it took myself months to to get my hands on one...just out of interest. So this makes this picture valuable. Too bad I don't have this kit anymore, or I could use it when I see such a request. This time I also decided not to even bother with a reply, because there is no money to make, not even the slightest to compensate for my time to look for the picture and upload it somewhere.

I can't even hire a babysitter for that fee. I try to restrain myself present myself professionally and educate if at all possible. I use BlinkBid which makes it easy to create an estimate in no time. In the door case I might have asked them if I get the doors for free in the deal since they do cost a pretty penny.

I have received e-mails like this and off course so many more flat out asking for me to provide images for free. After all it is an honor to be featured in their books...

It is crazy how they can use "Important Project" and "$150.00" as a fee in the same short request.  I suppose that if this place is located in New Jersey, and if the Photographer is located in New York, for example, then it could cost MORE IN GAS to travel there, than $150.00!

Here's a Possible Solution to People like this:
It comes from a very smart beauty accessories salesman here at one of the Malaysian Night Markets.  I overheard one lady ask the salesman, "How much for the nail clippers?"  The salesman said, "One Dollar."  The lady not wanting to pay that much for the nail clipper responded, "No lah, too high, I'll give you .70 cents!"  The salesman said, "Oh you want to pay .70 cents only, is it, then this model here is the one you want, I'll sell you this one for .70 cents!"  Which of course was a much inferior nail clipper.

He was polite, professional, served the client well, and delivered a product of the same value that the customer was asking for without getting railroaded in the process.

This "Photography for Credit" crap has got to go!  It is really maddening.

Why is it that people used to understand that it was the Professional Images on the cover of their brochure, or the images accompanying the stories in magazines, that gets a prospect hooked.

That photograph of the perfume bottle doesn't tell anyone how it smells, BUT, if it looks FREAKING FANTASTIC, it will get people to stop and notice it and want to try it out and perhaps make a purchase.

A lot of good points brought up in your note, Jim, and the other comments too.

I have spent many hours trying to come up with a favorable solution to the clients that want ".70 cents nail clippers". Problem is, that if I put an inferior product out there with my name on it, a potential client will take a look at the ".70cent" work and think that is the best I can do. I only have one type of nail clipper for sale - the best that I can do.

Very True Jim!  Agreed.  I too only want to give my best work and effort to a client.  I guess that solution may only work for nail clippers and not quality photography, dang, I wonder what can be done about those .70 cents people besides sending them on their way and hope they wise up.

Great thread! @Jim absolutely right about the .70ct clippers! @Johnson: In my experience these type of 'clients' will never learn and if we aim for a certain quality and level we should not be bothered about them.(thats sometimes ouch economically) If they can not afford you so be it, let them be on their way down the ladder of quality and professionalism. I am a very emotional and dedicated person and unfortunately not very diplomatic. I did more harm than good replying and educating these kind of people. I think that Jim did one very good thing: replying with a fair and industry conform estimate.

I just joined and was brousing questions and commets when I came on this post. I had to laugh.
I am an amature , looking at getting into more pro type work.
I recently got an e mail from a lady from a local travel website (government funded) She asked if they could use some of my images on their website and face book page. I responded, that the nature of face book was sharing , however if they wanted to use any images on their website there would be a fee involved, I asked for number of images , length of time etc. and I would give them a quote.
She responded that they did not have muchmoney  and that I would be given full credit for the images.
I responded saying that someone got paid to build the site, someone was being paid to host the site , someone was being paid to run the tourism office and she was being paid to send me the e-mails. I asked why she thought I should provide content for free, or were they all doing their work for credit, I never did hear back
