PostingMy first hello to you and a Portfolio Review request

Hello Community,

i am glad i stumbled over this nice Forum, and i hope i can help some off you with photo/technical related problems.

I am an Vienna (Austria) based Photographer , mainly i get paid for Press- Reportagephotpgraphy, but i intend to break into the Fashion- Commercial Buisness. 

So i would be glad if you could give me some oppinions on my online Portfolio at http://raimundappel.com

Welcome Raimund,

I had just a quick look and there are some real good photos on your site! Of course it will become a bit difficult to get feedback from an English speaking community if your site is in German only ;)

Ok, 2 instant observations:

  1. I think of me as a professional if it comes to web sites, but I was utterly confused about the way you present your pictures. While it’s a nice idea to scroll horizontal, there are no hints how this works...I would at least add some arrows or something as an indication "This way for more...". The moment you load the page, you see one main image and a partial one to the right, because there is no arrow, no scroll bar and nothing, I had no idea how this works. Of course it works, but this moment of confusion is too long. Could be easily be fixed with an arrow.
  2. There are no captions. Some of your pictures are so interesting, I want to know more about them, but as far as I can tell, there are no captions anywhere on the pictures. As a photo journalist I am sure you record more than just the photo (interviews, names, locations, etc) and it would improve your site and make the images more interesting if there would be captions additionally (maybe with an on/off switch) on your site.

That’s the only thing I noticed instantly.

Additional I think that if you would add 1) unique image names and 2) a way to order or at least request your images, you might could license some of the images also to people/magazines/newspapers. The current presentation makes it rather complicated to describe an image I would like...for example, the one between X and Y if you scroll to the right....creates too many misunderstandings and is too frustrating. Selling pictures should be convenient for the buyer.

Finally I think you lose out by not having an English version of your site. German limits you very much to Austria, Switzerland and Germany, but with an English version you can reach (almost) the rest of the world. Especially if you want to switch to Fashion and/or Commercial Business, English opens up a lot of opportunities.

Hello Juergen, 

thank you for your quick feedback.

For the Sidescroll Gallery , i will try to put an arrow into the first Picture in every Gallery, maybe that helps.

The Captions should appear as mousover, if thats not enough i'll think of something additional.

As for an english Version i will make one and include the link in the Header/Footer, at least i the categorys are allready in english ;)

Hi Raimund, I just checked again, no captions...tried in FireFox and Safari on Mac. I don't have time to check also on Windows, maybe it works there.

The arrow should help, even after knowing now how it works, there is this one moment where images load and nothing is clear...this first impression is very important or you might lose somebody looking at your pictures, which would be sad. But overall it’s a nice site and with great pictures.
