I'll be interested to hear what more experienced photogs say, Geoffrey, but I don't see how "headshots" can be considered "stock". I always thought stock was generic type of work, fairly interchangeable within subject types ... I wouldn't think headshots can be considered that way. They probably used that word so that they could get a cheap rate, considering what stock photography goes for!
It sounds like they just want unlimited use of the images ... perhaps exclusive. You're right, their value will probably expire after a couple of years and they'll need to be redone due to aging and staff turnover.
I don't think they'd necessarily want copyright, but if they do they should be charged accordingly.
I'd give the unlimited package use for 2 years quote ... and when quoting for the individual parts of the package, make sure that adding up the prices for separate uses adds up to WAY more than the full package price.
Considering that they've used your images without authorization in the past, I'd definitely be pushing them towards the unlimited use package option so that you don't have to worry about policing them.
And invoice them for the unauthorized use of previous work (hope you kept copies of the evidence).
I got a request from a company I have been doing some event/portrait work for the last year and a half to do some headshots, staged and candid "stock" images for them for marketing/recruiting purposes. I have an idea on what I feel I should charge but want to get the opinions from others.
They are requesting 2 estimates, their words "Flat rate purchase of unlimited use of the 20 photos." which I feel would be buying the copyright, so this would be an exorbitant amount? But they may also mean flat rate licensing as well, which I know will be less, but not too less.
Also a 2nd estimate looking for a little more specifics,
* Table top display
* Website
* 2 Brochures
* Series of Posters
* Series of Banners
still not enough info I feel but wanted to see what you all felt.
Anwyas was thinking licensing for up to 2 years as they would probably want something new by then. but of course that could change.
The way I see it, would prefer them to go the unlimited usage in a way as I would have no clue if they were to use something in another use. As I have seen some images used in their Annual Report, and other publications which I didn't authorize, but didn't want to rock the boat.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, I know it will be tough to give specifics as there isn't a lot of info.
