United States(Insert Huge Online Media Company Here) asks for usage of my pictures on their portal, how much?I just got this request in:
I work with (Insert Huge Online Media Company Here) and we’d love to feature the amazing photos of the theme park in a front page gallery (potentially internationally).
Do you have high res versions of the images available? (We were looking at the collection here: (removed)... Amazing photos!
I interpret this request as a call for free usage, but since its one of the most used portals on this planet (located in the USA), I am not willing to even think of doing promotion for them for free. What would you charge?
Thanks in advance.
I would be pretty blunt and respond with something along the lines of you have an offer for them. Since the image is so strong you would be willing to be featured in an ad for Yahoo and provided it was international you would not charge them for the use of your likeness:)
Seriously, I would simply tell them that in the same way that they charge for their intellectual property you also charge for yours...
How long for? How many photo's?

Ok, after asking how to proceed with the licensing I got this answer which I kind of expected:
Thanks so much for the quick response! From here, I guess let me know what will be best for you. We typically don't pay for photos (we have paid as much as $150 for exclusive sets, though, so happy to explore that route if it is more appealing). Since it is a front page feature, we usually work with websites by directing traffic through a link -- click on a hyperlink to see the full collection of images on your website. That can send millions of readers to your site, so sometimes is useful in terms of exposure (sometimes not if you are not looking for exposure or have a site that can easily crash). Just let me know what would work best and we can go from there. I'd love to find a way to include these photos, I think they are great and our readers would love them. Keep me posted if there is a way. The thing is, such a usage is worth >$15,000 for this specific usage and getting offered $150 max is basically an insult. Here is my response:ah, I thought so. Thanks a lot, but I give it a miss...currently I don't need this exposure and I make it a habit not to give out pictures for free, especially not if Yahoo would make the money on advertisements with my content...I am happy to reconsider if you would agree to share the advertisement revenue based on a 50%/50% key for the pages where my pictures would appear. But for free or peanuts I am feeling already underpaid just to respond to this request.
Very sorry for that, but again thanks for your interest. So much for these flattering requests, but I am not really in the position to make this certain media company (which name I accidentally slipped) even richer without compensation. The person who asked was very nice, but this doesn't really pays the bills.
